At Plaza Dental our aim is for every patient to have the best oral health (teeth and gums) possible. Dental diseases:
- Caries (tooth decay)
- Periodontal Disease ( loss of gum and bone around tooth)
- Excessive Tooth Wear (from grinding or acid erosion)
These are all lifestyle diseases. This means that while some people are more ‘at risk’ or more likely to suffer from these problems, in almost all cases the problem can be prevented by making the appropriate changes at home.
While there is no miracle cure, or magic bullet that works for everyone, our Hygiene team, led by Melany Pollock work out a personalised program for every patient, then review and assist with any changes that may be causing difficulties. The kinds of changes that often help people include:
- Changing how you clean your teeth
- Changing what we clean our teeth with (different toothbrushes, floss, and toothpastes)
- Dietary changes
- Smoking cessation.
We work with you to work out what will work best for you, and offer ongoing support to help you with these changes.
For children our aim is to help them establish good habits, which will last a lifetime. This may include demonstrating and helping them with correct cleaning methods, and discussing healthy eating habits. For the first time in over 50 years decay rates in children are rising. We want our patients to reverse this trend and grow up with beautiful healthy teeth.
More adults are keeping more of their teeth for longer. This is great as studies show that this improves people’s quality of life. However, as we get older changes occur which increase our risk of dental diseases. This means that sometimes what used to be effective in maintaining oral health no longer works.
Our adult preventive programs are aimed at identifying problems early, working out what changes will help most effectively, and then aiding you in the transition, and regularly reviewing progress.
